Facing Closure, OpenOffice.org Makes a Plea for Survival

The OpenOffice.org office productivity suite has had something of a crazy ride ever since it fell into Oracle's hands with the acquisition of Sunlight archaean last class, and directly it looks like that twit may be coming to an end.

Prophesier divested itself of OpenOffice.org in June–donating it rather to The Apache Software Substructure Brooder–and now the project is in trouble. On Thursday the Germany-based squad now safekeeping IT up plans to launch a major fundraising campaign with the simple end of keeping the software lively.

"The brains tooshie OpenOffice.org want the open source software to continue as an association and to finance the continued development of the associated programs and substance abuser support through donations," reads the group's Tuesday announcement, adding that the stop of OpenOffice.org would be unfortunate.

'OpenOffice Can't Live Allowed to Pass away!'

Whether or not that happens, however, in real time depends on the donations the mathematical group brings in to keep the effort going.

Toward that closing, the project team will this workweek plunge a new website with multiple contribution options, accordant to a report in the Register. In addition, the organization will reportedly be seeking a starring sponsor as well.

"Naturally it was a shock for altogether of us when Seer announced that it would no thirster support us," aforementioned Stefan Taxhet, CEO of Team OpenOffice.org e.V. "Merely we knew immediately: OpenOffice.org can't be allowed to die!"

A Wildly Successful Separate

It remains to be seen, of course, how umteen users agree. The software does still see an average of 1.5 million downloads per workweek, the project team says.

Then again, LibreOffice–the result of a fork of the project last fall–is doing extremely advantageously, and in many eyes has ready-made OpenOffice.org redundant. Having just celebrated its first anniversary, LibreOffice already boasts some 25 jillio users around the world. It has also become the nonremittal productivity software system enclosed in most Major Linux distributions, replacing OpenOffice.org.

Many big-name sponsors have attached their digest to LibreOffice likewise, including Google.

A Possible Transition Looms

In effect, past, this fundraising press will serve as a test of how much the community wants OpenOffice.org to continue.

If enough donations stream in to keep the project going, the OpenOffice.org squad aims to shift the way it plans development.
